FP Genetics, a leader in seed distribution, has pledged $12,000 to Agriculture in the Classroom-Manitoba (AITC-M) to support the creation of an innovative new educational resource for Manitoba’s high school biology students. The donation will fund the purchase of 50 CRISPR genetic education kits and the development of a comprehensive classroom activity and teacher’s guide, slated for release in Fall 2024.

“One of our wishes this December giving season was for a Santa to swoop in with a gift to fund the development of this new resource, which was near the top of our list of dream projects for 2024,” says Katharine Cherewyk, Executive Director of AITC-M. “We’re so grateful to the team at FP Genetics for recognizing the value of what this resource has to offer. Teachers are already telling me how excited they are to start exploring genetics in their classrooms.”

Chris Churko, CEO of FP Genetics, hopes the resource will teach future scientists about modern techniques that are being used to increase food production.

“Agriculture in the Classroom-Manitoba has a long track record of delivering high-quality classroom resources that engage students to think about their future and the future of our planet. Learning about genetics will help students understand the genetic traits of plants and animals. As our agriculture industry faces challenges like climate change and growing food demand, skilled individuals with a background in genetics will be vital in innovating and implementing solutions to ensure food security.”

Hands-on resources that help explore genetics are in high demand by high school educators. The simplified CRISPR classroom kits include everything students need to explore the foundations of genetics hands-on in the classroom or school lab.

CRISPR technology is one of many techniques used by agricultural, food and medical scientists around the world to change the genetics of an organism and how it interacts with its environment. Manitoba students will have the opportunity to learn about the complexities of genetics and their importance in agriculture and food through hands-on CRISPR experiments. This, combined with real-life examples of other techniques used in genetic modification in agriculture and food production throughout history, will give students and teachers access to leading-edge technology and current information in the ever-growing field of genetics.

This financial commitment from FP Genetics ensures sustained support for AITC-M's mission, paving the way for a brighter future in agricultural education. As we celebrate this landmark investment, we also encourage other organizations to consider making similar multi-year commitments that can significantly advance the cause of agriculture education.
